Energy provider given go-ahead for windfarm
Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has been given the green light to build a major new windfarm in Scotland.
The gas and electricity provider, which is one of the UK's leading energy suppliers, is to build a new farm at a site at Achany in Sutherland after a public inquiry into the project was concluded in August.
It is believed that the development, which will be the company's seventh windfarm, will cost £55 million and be commissioned in 2010.
Commenting on the consent, SSE chief executive Ian Marchant said he was "pleased" that the project had finally been given the go-ahead and ensured that the construction of the development would be carried out efficiently.
He added: "We will seek to work in partnership with the local community throughout the construction period."
SSE's announcement on the development of a new windfarm came after it announced the takeover of Slough Heat and Power.
Part of the deal includes the acquisition of the firm's combined heat and power plant, which is the largest power station of its kind in the UK.
